Project Huldra is my solo game development project rooted in Norwegian folklore — specifically the legend of the Huldra, a seductive and terrifying forest spirit who lures the unwary deep into the woods, never to return. I've always been drawn to the eerie, understated horror of Scandinavian mythology, and this project is my attempt to bring that world to life in an interactive, visceral way. The Huldra isn't a monster you fight — she's one you outwit, or die trying.
On the technical side, I'm building the entire experience in Unreal Engine 5, using Lumen for dynamic lighting and Nanite for high-fidelity geometry — pushing for a photorealistic Nordic forest that feels genuinely oppressive. Assets are being crafted in ZBrush, Blender, and Substance Painter, with a focus on environmental storytelling: every tree, ruin, and scattered object should make the world feel lived-in and dangerous. The AI driving the Huldra is a core challenge — I want her behaviour to feel emergent and unpredictable, not scripted.
The project has been in active development since June 2022 and is still very much a work in progress. It's a long-term personal endeavour — part technical deep-dive, part passion project — and I'm sharing it here as an honest look at what solo game development actually looks like over time. More updates to come.
